On form TICS secure comfortable victory
Determined to put the historic slow start to bed, Torquay started the game at a good pace, putting Plymstock under pressure right away. The early pressure resulted in a scrum close to the Plymstock line which, with a solid effort from the front five, saw good ball fed through the hands to Harry Jamieson who finished off the move well to score the first try for Torquay in the first two minutes. The try was converted by Max Robinson.
Torquay continued the pressure straight from the restart, putting themselves in a good attacking position near the opposition 22yd line. Excellent vision and execution from Max Robinson exposed the Plymstock rushing defence with a superb cross field kick, right into the arms of Finn Tudge who did a great job of beating his man to score under the posts. Another successful conversion put Torquay 14 points ahead.
Torquay continued the pressure with some excellent pick and drive work from the close forwards, putting Plymstock on the back foot and creating another excellent ball for the three-quarters to work with. This time the ball was fed along the line to Finn Tudge who scored a well-finished wingers try in the corner.
After the restart, despite some spirited defence from Plymstock, Torquay were able to break the defensive line with Owen Dawe Smith making himself unstoppable by running a powerful straight line on the 20 minute mark resulting in another try for TICS.
In response, Plymstock put up a spirited fight against a Torquay side that had perhaps become a little complaicent with the early scores and were able to produce two well-worked tries on 23 and 30 minutes, one of which was successfully converted.
Some firm words from captain Max Roberts allowed Torquay to regroup and respond with some long spells of pressure towards the end of the first half. The hard work from Ben Willis and Sam Jordan in the forwards secured an excellent ball for Harry Salter to spin wide to Harvey Thompson who hit the ball at pace and fed quickly through the hands to Harry Jamieson to finish off an excellent back line try, duly converted by Max Robinson.
Just before the close of half time Harry Jamieson weaved his way through the Plymstock defence once again to secure his hat-trick of tries and bring the first half to a close at 38-12.
A good squad turnout enabled Torquay to rotate their players at half time.
Shortly into the start of the second half, Ben Willis, with the bit between his teeth, powered through the defensive line of Plymstock to score the first of what turned out to be a hat-trick of tries for him within the first 10 minutes of the second half, effectively putting the game out of reach for Plymstock. Two of the three Ben Willis tries were converted by the in-form boot of Max Robinson
Despite the early tries in the second half, Plymstock showed their character and resilience by upping their game to apply pressure on Torquay for continued spells in the second half, resulting in 3 late tries for Oaks in the second half.
The final whistle saw a well-deserved victory for Torquay with a scoreline of 57-31.
Still plenty to work on for TICS but all in all a very good performance from a Torquay squad that's looking stronger every game.
